The load-bearing force of foam is called the identification force.

Foam is one of the most versatile materials of all time. It can be used for everything from packing materials to insulation to cushions to flotation devices. It is hardened to make parts for furniture. Innovators create new uses for it every day.

The foam manufacturing process is very complex. You don’t have to be able to understand this process, however, to be able to appreciate its many uses or to know what kind of foam to buy. You only need to know what density you require for your purpose. The denser the foam, the more resistant it is to pressure and the more resilient it is. Resilience refers to how quickly the foam springs back into shape after being compressed.

The load-bearing force of foam is called the identification force. This force is measured in the number of pounds required to compress a foam sample 15 inches square and 4 inches thick. The resulting number refers to the resilience of the foam sample and suitable uses.
